Esther Sherrod Watkins is a retired educator with 43 years of experience in the field of education in Los Angeles Unified School District, and with two years in Mississippi. She received a B.A. degree I n English with minors in library science, psychology, social studies, and science from Tougaloo College, Tougaloo, MS, and a Master’s degree in English education from the University of San Francisco, San Francisco, CA. She left the classroom to become the school’s librarian/library media specialist and served as the school’s writing coordinator where she helped students and the school win many writing awards. One of her poems is published in A Voyage to Remember: The National Library of Poetry, and the author is also listed in Who’s Who of American Women, 2006-2007 edition. In 22009, her first edition of Windows to My Soul was published. Because of this publication, she was a runner-up for poet laureate of Altadena, CA, her former residence.
Currently, she is an active member of Belair Presbyterian Church, Los Angeles, CA where she sings in the worship choir. She is an avid believer in giving back to the community. For example, she enjoys giving service to the community and working with young people; therefore, she is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a national/international public service organization. She, too, is a member of Pasadena Delta Foundation, and the national and local NAACP.
Esther grew up with a passion for reading and writing spending many summers on her grandparents’ farm. Her grandmother, a teacher, introduced her to reading great authors. She found that she enjoyed reading, reciting poetry, and penning her own poetry. Any person, scene, or event that she wanted to remember, she would pen a poem. As an adult, she often is asked to create a poem for a certain occasion or recite her poetry for a certain event. The poet’s thrust is to share her thoughts and feelings with family, friends, and all poetry lovers. A great poet once said, “Poetry makes immortal all that is best and most successful in the world.”
Esther is a widow with two ingenious adult children. Her hobbies are family, writing, reading, walking, singing, indoor/outdoor games, and a passion for traveling the world.
Her motto: Remember age is just a number; continue to unlock your potential.
